Day 4 - Port Augusta to Lake Hart - 2nd August 2017

Despite the facilities block being very old we both had a lovely hot shower this morning before hitting the road once again. Our first stop was at what was at one time Australia's premiere space centre, the town of Woomera. What was once a town focussed on testing military hardware became the chosen site in the nineteen sixties for development and testing of the European Launcher Development Organisation rockets. ELDO as it was named was a consortium of several European countries comprising Great Britain, France, Belgium, West Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. In later years NASA became involved and led many projects in this remote South Australian town. We spent quite some time exploring the museum as well as driving around the town which is now largely deserted, the military housing having been vacated many years prior. From Woomera we drove on to our stop for the night at the stunning Lake Hart, a salt lake some 48 kms to the west of Woomera. A short walk from the rest area crossing the railway line that skirts the lake takes you to the dry salt bed. It is simply beautiful with the sun reflecting off the white salt crystals until, in the distance, one can see the water of the lake where it hasn't evaporated as yet. I believe we spent the night at this rest area with no facilities whatsoever other than a picnic table.
