Day 6 - Coober Pedy - 4th August 2017

This morning was spent doing a bit of housekeeping in the motorhome as we were booked to go on a 5 1/2 hour town and Breakaways tour in the afternoon. At 1 p.m. we were picked up by Aaron from Noble Tours in a small 4 wheel drive tour bus. The tour started with a visit to Josephine's Gallery with a discussion on Indigenous Art and Culture. We then visited Faye's underground house and heard her story of how she started the tourism industry in coober Pedy. Next stop was the extraordinary underground Serbian Orthodox church with it's church, community hall, priest's home and religious school. From here we went on a 70 km round trip to the Dog Fence, opal mining fields, the Moon Plains, the incredibly beautiful Breakaways and lastly a visit to an underground opal mine that had been converted to a tourist destination. The Dog Fence stretches for some 5300 kms from near the Sunshine Coast in Queensland to the edge of the Great Australian Bight in South Australia. It was built primarily to keep dingoes out of the rural sheep grazing south of the country. The Moon Plains I assume were named as a result of the resemblance to the rocky surface of our moon. On our return we had a quick meal before turning in for the night.
