We set of with Sue driving the first 130 km today before I took over for the rest of the 290 km drive to Port Hedland. We found a site for the night at the Discovery Parks caravan park at Cooke Point. After a quick look around town we then drove to the port are to enquire about tours and as there was one leaving shortly after we got there we signed up for the tour. The next two hours were spent on a very interesting boat tour around Port Hedland berths along side the large ore carriers that make up the bulk of the marine traffic in this port. The tour was run by the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre who are one of the more than 300 Missions to Seafarers centres worldwide. Then it was back to the caravan park from where we set out on foot for a quick walk to the nearby beach - the tide was well out but it was still a pretty little beach are. Then back to the caravan park for a swim in the park's swimming pool.
Our blog created to record our experiences as we travel around the western side of Australia during the winter of 2017. Still trying to see as much of the planet as possible. We hope you enjoy our observations and holiday snaps.

Day 42 - Broome to Sandfire Roadhouse - 9th September 2017
We packed up the motorhome while watching three sets of a US Open semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro. En route we stopped at Coles in Broome fora big grocery shop to restock our motorhome before then driving the 320 km to Sandfire Roadhouse. The countryside en route was flat and uninteresting with low scrub and no interesting features to speak on. The Sandfire Roadhouse campground had quite a few peacocks, chickens and a camel to amuse us. That evening Sue received some awful news regarding the son of a friend who had taken his own life and needless to say this has made us both feel terribly sad and concerned for the friend and partner's welfare.
Day 41 - Broome - 8th September 2017
Spent part of the morning watching a US Open women's semi-final tennis match on television before then having breakfast and donning bathers for a day at the beach. We walked from the Caravan Park to Cable Beach and swam between the flags several times interspersed with having coffee at the beach cafe and reading books in the shade on the grass. then it was back to the Caravan Park for more swimming only this time in the rather large swimming pool. By then it was 3 p.m. and so we just hung around until it was time to catch the bus to the "stairway to the moon" event at the Town Beach and also the night markets. We enjoyed a delicious meal purchased from the street food vendors at the night markets and watched the reflections on the tidal flats known as "stairway to the moon" before heading home once again.
Day 40 - Broome - 7th September 2017
Today was a do nothing day - do nothing in the sense that we were too tired to do any sightseeing etc. so instead we relaxed as best we could and attended to chores such as washing our clothing etc. We also booked campground sites at both Exmouth and also in Cape Range National Park.
Day 39 - Broome - 6th September 2017
Following a full cooked breakfast this morning we set off to visit Gantheaume Point near Broome. This an area of outstanding natural beauty on the coast with the rich red rocks that feature in this Point and also some dinosaur footprints which can be seen here. Also of interest was the Osprey nest built on a lookout tower nearby. After enjoying this area we headed back to town where we again visited the museum to watch videos about the World War II air raids and the pearling industry. Then it was off to the Town Beach and the nearby shopping area. Here we had lunch, falafels as I recall, followed by a walk on the Croc Jetty. Then back to the Caravan Park for a rest before later taking a bottle of wine and heading to Cable Beach to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The evening was then spent watching some televisison and catching up with friends by phone.
